The newest addition to the Meet the Authors series here at Lucent Dusk is Midori Natari Himura. Midori is a long time writer of original fiction, but decided to try her hand at fanfiction starting in 2001. Writing primarily for the Rurouni Kenshin fandom, come see why she lists her favorite character as Misao Makimachi, and how she is the only author interviewed thus far who agrees with me that zombies rock!

  • How long have you been writing?

I've been writing original fiction for the past 15 years, but I started writing fanfiction back in 2001.

  • What first got you interested in writing fanfiction?

Well, I discovered fanfiction shortly after I got into anime in 2000. I'd always enjoyed writing and I looked at a few of my favorite fanfics and thought "I can do that." Also I thought that it would be good practice. So I started a profile on Fanfiction.Net and the rest is history.

  • Are there any fanfic authors that have influenced your own writing? If so, who are they and what do they write?

Well, when I first got into fanfic I was really into Kentaro, Deena, and Clarus. They mostly wrote for the Rurouni Kenshin fandom, which was my biggest fandom when I was actively writing. Unlike myself, they were more focused on yaoi, but I just loved their writing styles.

  • What are your favorite shows to write fiction for? What about these shows lend themselves to the creative exercise of fanfiction?

Rurouni Kenshin and Weiss Kreuz. I think that in both of these shows there were just a lot of questions left unanswered and a lot of possibilities "behind the scenes," so to speak, for relationship and character development. On top of that, they had good plotlines and great characters, which make for a great jumping off point. There were a few other fandoms I tried to get into, but I didn't write as much for any other fandom as I did for RK.

  • Which of your stories is your personal favorite? Why?

I'd have to say White Tiger, Jade Concubine. It was the most unique and personal for me out of all my stories. I think the reason for this is because it centered around two of my favorite characters in the series (Misao and Enishi) and because I felt like it had been my best writing up to that point.

  • Who is your all time favorite character to write for? Why?

Misao Makimachi. I think she was my favorite because I really connected to her personality and she just came easily to me. Whenever I thought up a story idea for RK, she was the first character to pop up in my head. There was definitely a strong connection there.

  • It is an old adage that the best writers are also readers. What types of books do you read, and who are some of your favorite authors?

Truth be told, my favorite genre is romance, but I also love fantasy, sci-fi, mystery/suspense, young adult fiction, and, of course, I adore manga. Some of my favorite authors are Jane Austen, Robin McKinley, Dean Koontz, J.K. Rowling, Jo Beverley, Jodi Thomas, Charlotte Brontë, L.J. Smith, and Robert Frost.

  • Have you tried your hand at original fiction? Do you have any aspirations with regards to original fiction?

Yes, I actually started off writing originals long before I wrote fanfics. I really do hope to be published someday and I want to write a variety of genres. Romance, fantasy, and, hopefully, young adult fiction. I'd love to be able to write for a living, since I've been doing it for as long as I can remember and I get a lot of joy out of it.

  • If you have written original fiction, is there anywhere we can go to read it?

Sure. I write as Harper Bell on FictionPress.

  • How do you conquer the problem of writer's block?

Wow, this is actually a tough one for me. I suffer from horrible writer's block sometimes and I've found the only way to conquer it is just to keep writing, even when you don't feel like it and you think that every word is crap. Practice makes perfect, in my opinion.

  • Have you discovered any tips or tricks that help with your writing that you would like to share with our readers?

All I can suggest is to read and write as much as possible. There aren't any tips or tricks better than that. And read Stephen King's "On Writing," because it's a wonderful book.

  • If you could meet any one person from history or fiction, who would it be and why?

That's hard, but I'd probably say either Jesus or Buddha. I just think it would be awesome to be around one of them for a day and just see what they were like in person, since the religions that interest me the most are Buddhism and Christianity.

  • Which has the greatest coolest factor - Ninjas, pirates, or zombies? Why?

Zombies! I love ninjas and pirates, don't get me wrong, but I've always been a sucker for a good zombie movie, so they definitely get my vote.
