Being in the US, I am obviously behind on viewing the final extended episodes for David Tennant as the Doctor. Luckily, BBC America has aired them, and Comcast had them on On-Demand. So, I am working my way through them on my path to seeing the ultimate finale.

The first in the series is The Next Doctor. It is a typical Doctor type of adventure - Cybermen in Londontown wreaking havoc and only the genius of a Time Lord can stop them. I enjoy the adventures, and this one was no different. The added plot line of figuring out the identity of this other fellow calling himself the Doctor was just an added bonus.

But then, we get to the very end of the show. The final scene shows the Doctor explaining why he no longer has a companion.

'They leave me', he says. This is obviously a reference to Martha. And I have to say, Martha didn’t leave so much as she was driven away by the careless way the Doctor treated her.

'They find someone else', he adds. Ah, no. Rose did not find someone else. He forced her to stay with a human version of himself. The Doctor did not give her a choice in the matter, and we all know that if she had been given the choice she would have stayed with him till the day she died.

'They forget all about me' he says mournfully. Hell no! Donna didn’t forget about him. She had the memories sucked out of her head. She would have gladly gone to her grave with all memories intact, but once again, he didn’t give his companion a choice.

And then the Doctor has the gall to stand there and say his companions broke his hearts? They broke his hearts? What about all the heartache he inflicted on each of them? What a hypocritical bastard.

It was at this point that I realized it really was time for David Tennant to move on as the Doctor. Not only that, it was time for RTD to stop writing for the Doctor. We’ve had some good times, but RTD has turned the Doctor from a tragic but still likeable figure into someone I don’t have any pity for anymore. The Doctor has been alone and miserable for so long that my sympathy reserves are just about used up. As far as I'm concerned, the Doctor is alone because he chooses to be, and the fact that the Doctor doesn’t work harder to change his lot in life when he obviously could, makes it hard for me to relate to him as a character.

I think I’m ready for the new Doctor. I hope Moffat makes him less of a pitiful spectacle and more like the hero of old.
